Sample Learning Experiences

SAMPLE ONE:

Objective:

    Students will incorporate personal experiences into identifying with the main character in Solo, by Paul Greaghty and write about what he/she would do in a similar situation.

Learning Experiences:

    Teacher will read Solo and encourage discussion about what happened in the story.  Students will share their own personal feelings about feeling alone or left out.

    Students will write a story prompted by "If I were a penguin I would…" and describe survival techniques and dangers they heard about in Solo.

SAMPLE TWO:

Objective:

    Students will write a poem about penguins.

Learning Experience:

    1. Teacher will read Antarctic Antics: A Book of Penguin Poems and initiate discussion about the poems.  Students will share information about animal life in Antarctica as described in the poems.  Students will recognize that most poems rhyme.  Students will write their own poem about an Antarctic animal. The students love these poems!

Assessment:

    Teachers will observe if the students include rhyming in their poems and accurate information about their animal.
